Bringing about a change is not easy, even at a community level. The internet has proven its value as a helpful resource when reaching out to others to encourage a positive shift. SeeClickFix is an application that empowers users to do just that. The user can visit the site and search for their town. This will reveal a list of items posted by other users. Items can include anything from dangerous pot holes to drug dealing and other negative activities. The idea is that if enough people see these problems on SeeClickFix, they will vote on them and encourage a change. If enough people speak out about the issue, then those with the power to correct the issue will be more willing to take action. See Click Fix also uses Google Maps to help users see geographic locations and what is going on in those places. Users can also read through previous issues that were fixed.
SeeClickFix was founded in September of 2008 by Miles Lasater, Ben Berkowitz, Kam Lasater and Jeff Blasius. Based out of New Haven, Connecticut, the team currently consists of fewer than five individuals. The application was originally created to help citizens help themselves and bring about positive changes in their communities. In 2011 it has raised equity funding from O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures and Omidyar Network.
There are many resources available to individuals who feel passionate about a cause or issue. These tend to focus on a larger scale. See Click Fix gives users a way to speak directly to those within their community and share issues of all sizes that directly affect their neighbors. User can vote and unite their voices so that they are heard by people who can make change happen.
The SeeClickFix website greets users with a wide Google Map that shifts around the user’s selected geographic location, showing an example of a current issue listed there. The site is well organized. After entering a location in the search box, the user is taken to a list of current issues for that location. They can vote or enter a new issue.
A new user can create an account by clicking on either the orange “Free Sign Up” button or the green “Go Pro! Free Trial!” button, both of which are found along the right hand side of the homepage. The free membership registration form asks for a display name, email address and password. The Pro 15 day free trial button asks the user to select their desired membership plan. The user is also given the option of registering through an existing Facebook profile.
See Click Fix offers users four membership options. The first is a free account which is given access to basic features and intended for the everyday user. The paid memberships are geared towards professional users. The Pro membership costs around $40 per month and includes management tools, branding features and Excel export capabilities.
